Pikes Peak Highway in Colorado is the second highest paved road in North America. At 7:45 this morning, the summit temperature was 39.9 F and the 10-minute average wind speed was 28.8mph. Over a relatively short distance of 18.2 miles, I climbed 6,930 feet up and around the mountain. The average grade is 6.5%. All the way to the 14,115-foot summit. The biggest challenge: a 10% rise from 12,930 to 13,969 feet. I found myself leaning over my handlebars numerous times as I stru
This is one of my favorite photos. It reminds me sometimes a photo never tells the whole story. Taken during the 2016 Ride4Gabe — Maine-to-Mobile, this photo captures just how awesome Gabe Griffin is. Yet, besides the celebratory thumbs up and beautiful blue skies, there is a very ugly reality that the lens cannot capture. Yes, Gabe has cute red hair, freckles, and he can make anyone laugh with his quick wit. But none of that matters when he struggles to stand without assista
Almost 2 years later, this photo — from the 2015 RAAM Finish Line — is still my phone lock screen. It is one of my most proud family moments. So much is behind those tired faces; strong, determined, exhausted @kartoone76; two brave, flexible, supportive kids; and a smile on me that says, "Grace, alone, got us here." Oh, and I said I'd never do it again! Then a husband — with a dream, a cause that inspires us all, and a God that has promised grace and will bring us home — all
Today I see a part of my family off, as together we begin Ride4Gabe III. It is always an emotional time for us — back here at home we will surely miss Gabe, Addie, and Scott. Our entire family is very excited to see you accomplish the goals for this year's race. Accelerated access to medicine is so important, so please tell everyone you see why we care so much about this cause. And, don't forget, we love y'all! — Love Y'all All — Thank you Team R4G and Team Toone. You are jus
The Ride4Gabe III Journey Begins Today My prayer: "May God bless us all with safe travels, the wisdom to make the right decisions, and the ability to make a difference for the lives of Gabe and so many others battling rare disease. May God keep Brian Toone and his crew safe as they battle deserts, mountains, weather, and anything else that may cross their path. Amen."
As in past years, I truly believe that we are going to make a huge impact this year with legislation at the
As we prepare for Ride4Gabe III — 2017 Race Across America — I am humbled by the remembrance of what today means to our family. — Today is always a tough day for us. — Nine years ago, Gabe was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. I remember getting that phone call, and knowing he had Duchenne the moment the doctor said hello. And I remember Traci falling to the ground, in the fetal position, screaming "NO ... NOT MY BABY!" The Griffins I looked her in the face and said
